I don’t know about you, but I’m still wondering how this past year went by so quickly?  It seems like only yesterday we were ringing in the New (2017) Year and welcoming  back to back babies in January during that deep freeze (you remember the one, don’t you)?!

As work wives, Sarah and I are at the point in our relationship where we can read each other’s thoughts, and know exactly what the other one needs us to do.  We have grown together as doulas and business owners over the last year and are enjoying this time as our visions and hopes for our company come to fruition.

In 2018 we supported over 90 families through their prenatal, birth and postpartum journeys and have grown our local Facebook groups (Orangeville & GTA) to over 700 local families combined.

Expanding our classes

Sarah & I love to teach, but we also love to collaborate.  One particular class that has taken off in popularity this year has been our Baby Led Weaning Workshop led by local registered dietitian Angela Wallace of Eat Right Feel Right.  We look forward to expanding our class offerings with Angela in 2019 as we explore an older demographic:  the picky eater (stay tuned for details)!

Ahh! Sweet sleep! As an infant sleep educator, I spend a lot of my time talking to families about sleep expectations for the first couple of years and what “normal” looks like, and how to cope. I usually do this one on one in their home, but there is a group class in the works to help educate families about normal infant sleep. There are a few more details to finish up, but we are hoping the course will be ready in the first half of 2019. Stay tuned!

Growing Our Team

When Spring came to us, so did Daniela – and she was the perfect addition to our incredible team.  Daniela and I did our doula training together many moons ago, so when we reconnected on a professional level this year, I had no doubts that this was the right step for us. We also met Nadia in the fall, and although we weren’t looking to expand our team at the time, after meeting with her, we couldn’t imagine NOT having her as a part of the LOL team!

I want to thank Daniela, Nadia and our veteran team member Nicole for an amazing year – for being a part of our growth, for being such amazing women, mothers and doulas. All three of you are an inspiration and a joy to be around. We are so thankful to be on this journey with you! Now, if we could only get a photo of the 4 of us together!!

Perpetual Students

Perpetual student is an accurate descriptor for both myself and Sarah. After having to reschedule multiple times (babies come first), Sarah was finally able to attend her Labour Doula cross-training with with ProDoula and is on track to complete all of the certification requirements by the end of 2019.

I am following my passion for supporting women in their infant feeding journeys, and this past summer began working towards becoming an IBCLC – an Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant. It will be a long journey, but one I am looking forward to and enjoying so far.

It will be an incredible moment in my career when I am able to support families in the capacity of an IBCLC!

Let’s Get Social!

Sarah & I continue to host our Mom & Baby Socials in Orangeville at The Lion’s Den Yoga Studio on the first Monday of every month.  A special thanks to the Lion’s Den as well as Mochaberry Coffee for their continued support of this FREE event!

We have loved collaborating with local business owners and practitioners to attend as special guests.  Be sure to check out some of their blog posts if you haven’t already:

Birth Options Night with the Midwives

I feel as though collaboration has been a theme over the past year, and one collaboration that I’m particularly fond of has been with the Midwives of Headwater Hills and their Birth Options Night.  It was over a year ago when Melissa Nowell, RM approached me about being a part of their semi-monthly Birth Options Night – and it was a match right from the start.  Besides the fact that I get to meet so many incredible families at these events, I have learned so much from Melissa – she is an incredible facilitator, and incredibly passionate not only about her career, but about supporting families during this important time in their lives.  Thank you for continuing to include us in this informative (and fun) evening you facilitate for local families!

Nothing Left to Say but “Thanks”!

Looking back, I can’t help but get the warm and fuzzies about this past year.  We have had the pleasure of meeting so many incredible families – and we want you to know, that we have truly enjoyed being a part of your lives.
To our own families, we want to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts.  To our husbands and children, who sometimes have to do things without us because we are “at a birth”, to our parents and extended family who are always willing to step in and help us – Thank you, thank you, thank you!  You make it possible for us to do our work as doulas and serve the families in this incredible community of ours.
